Memphis citizen and Kentucky Wildcats men’s basketball coach Chris Simmons died unexpectedly. Chris Simmons passed away on Wednesday, January 18, 2023, according to a social media post by John Calipari, the head men’s basketball coach at Kentucky.

Coach Calipari wrote, “Chris Simmons, our trainer at Memphis who came with me here, passed away.” “He was old-school and would sleep in the dormitory if it made it easier for youngsters to get ready for playtime. They were constantly sheltered but never coddled. I admired everything he accomplished for my family and loved him like a brother. Chris, RIP.

It is not known what caused Simmons’ death. No information was provided about the funeral services. On social media, everyone is mourning him, remembering him, and expressing their condolences.

In the summer of 2019, Chris Simmons returned to his alma institution to work as the head athletic trainer for coach Penny Hardaway’s staff. Simmons earned a bachelor’s degree in exercise and sport science from the University of Memphis in 2002 and is a certified member of the National Academy of Sports Medicine and the National Athletic Trainers’ Association. He was sitting on the bench when the Memphis squad made it to the NCAA championship game in 2007–2008.

Simmons served as the men’s basketball team’s head athletic trainer at the University of Kentucky for ten seasons (until the 2018–19 season). The Wildcats captured their ninth national championship in his third campaign.

Forty-five players, including four NBA No. 1 overalls and 24 NBA lottery picks, were chosen in the NBA Draft while playing for Simmons’ teams at Kentucky and Memphis.

He was a motivated coach who always provided his players with the most excellent advice and supported them as they gave their all for the team. The well-known coach Simmons was a dedicated worker who always brought out the best in his players.
